A New Decade
2021 / 5 min 11 sec / Experimental
[Overview]
This experimental video looks back on the decade from 2011 to 2020, the second decade of the 21st century.
It begins with the Great East Japan Earthquake and ends with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Using major news events and population data, the work reflects on frequent natural disasters and Japan’s declining population.
It asks whether Japanese society, and the people living in it, were able to move forward during these ten years.
In 2011, the declining birthrate was already a serious issue, and it was not solved during the following decade.
I do not feel that the country became much better over those ten years.
Still, new lives continued to be born, and I find this striking.
Thinking about the personal desires and actions behind each birth gives me a strange feeling.
Society and the nation continue to exist through human desire.
